Swipe down on the Home Screen, type a word such as “passport” or “receipt”, and your iPhone can show matching photos right in the search results. That is handy until someone else is holding your unlocked phone, or you are showing a friend something on screen and a private picture pops up.

This guide explains how to switch photo results off in Settings, what that does and does not hide, and what to do about photos that should never be searchable. Menu names depend on your iOS version.

Why do my photos appear in search?

The Photos app analyses your library on the device so it can recognise text, objects and places, and it lets the system search use that. Searching for a word can therefore bring up a photo of a document or a sign that contains it.

iOS lets you control this per app, and Photos is one of the apps you can switch off.

How do I turn off photo results in search?

  1. 1Open Settings. On iOS 17 and earlier, tap Siri & Search and scroll down to Photos. On newer versions the Photos settings are usually under Settings → Apps → Photos, and the same options sit in a Siri & Search section. If you cannot find it, use the search field at the top of Settings.
  2. 2Turn off Show Content in Search. This is the switch that stops the content of your photos from being used for search results.
  3. 3Optionally, turn off Show App in Search, so the Photos app itself is not offered as a result.
  4. 4Optionally, turn off Show When Sharing, so photo suggestions do not appear in the share sheet.

The wording and the exact list of switches differ between iOS versions. If a switch is missing on your phone, it is not offered in your version.

Four-step diagram: open the Photos search settings, turn off Show Content in Search, turn off the other Photos suggestions, and keep private photos out of the Photos library.

What does this not hide?

  • Searching inside the Photos app. Photos has its own search, and you can still search your library there. Anyone who opens Photos on an unlocked phone can see your pictures.
  • The photos themselves. They are still in the library, in your albums, in Memories and in Featured Photos. See how to stop unwanted photos showing up in Memories for the last two.
  • Other apps. Files, Messages and other apps have their own search settings, and apps that save pictures into the library put them in the same place.

So turning off search results is a tidy-up for the Home Screen and Lock Screen search, not protection for private pictures.

What about the Hidden album?

Moving a photo to the Hidden album takes it out of the main grid and the Recents view. In recent iOS versions the album itself is locked behind Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Apple's behaviour here has changed over time, and the album is still part of the Photos library on the phone. How to find the Hidden album on iPhone explains where it is and why it can be missing.

For photos that should be unavailable to anyone using your unlocked phone, a lock on the album is only one layer, and it still shares the library with everything else.

How do I keep private photos out of search entirely?

The reliable way is for a private photo never to be in the Photos library at all. Items in the library can be analysed and searched; items that live somewhere else cannot.

Lockboxy is an iPhone app that keeps photos, videos, files, notes and passwords in an encrypted vault behind its own passcode, with Face ID as an option. Photos and videos you add to the vault are stored there, not in the Photos library, and the app does not add vault items to Spotlight search. Photos you import from your library can be deleted from it afterwards, once you have checked they are in the vault.

If you delete a photo from Photos, it stays in Recently Deleted for up to 30 days, so empty that album too. How to permanently delete photos on iPhone walks through it.

To avoid the problem in the first place, Lockboxy's in-app camera saves straight into the vault, so the picture never reaches Photos. See how to hide photos on iPhone for the other options.

What are the limits?

  • Switching off photo search in Settings is free and built into iOS. It only affects search results, as described above.
  • Lockboxy's free plan holds up to 30 photos or videos and 10 files. Premium removes those limits; prices are on the Premium page and the app shows the exact price before you buy.
  • The vault key comes from your vault passcode. If you forget it and did not create a Recovery Key (Premium), nobody can open the vault, including us.
  • Apple changes menu names and behaviour between iOS versions. If a step does not match your screen, use Search in Settings.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my photos show up when I search my iPhone?

The Photos app analyses your library on the device so the system search can match words to photos. You can switch this off per app in Settings.

How do I stop photos appearing in Spotlight search?

In Settings, find the Photos options under Siri & Search and turn off Show Content in Search. You can also turn off Show App in Search and Show When Sharing.

Does turning off Show Content in Search hide my photos?

No. It only stops them from being offered in search results. They stay in the library, in albums, in Memories and in Photos' own search.

Do hidden photos appear in iPhone search?

It depends on the iOS version, and Apple has changed this over time. The Hidden album is still part of the Photos library, so do not rely on it for photos that must stay private.

Does Lockboxy add vault items to Spotlight search?

No. Vault content is not added to Spotlight, and photos and videos stored in the vault are not in your Photos library.

Want a private place with its own passcode?

Lockboxy encrypts photos, videos, files and notes on your device, behind a passcode separate from your phone's. No account, no server.
